['gærɪsn], William Lloyd, amerikanischer Publizist, * Newburyport (Massachusetts) 10. 12. 1805, ✝ New York 24. 5. 1879; mit seiner in Boston herausgegebenen Zeitschrift »The Liberator« (1831-65, 35 Bände) einer der unbeugsamsten Vorkämpfer einer sofortigen und entschädigungslosen Abschaffung der Sklaverei (Abolitionismus). War seine Kompromisslosigkeit politischen Lösungen eher abträglich, so half sie doch, die Sklavereifrage nicht zur Ruhe kommen zu lassen. Nach der Emanzipation wandte er sich anderen humanitären Reformen zu.
